National Poetry Writing Month

Lynn Kincanon
In 2017 during a workshop with Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer in Loveland the class was encouraged to follow her lead of writing a poem a day for 30 days. I have been writing a poem a day ever since. In 2022, I became the second Loveland Poet Laureate. Is there a connection here? I believe there is. Not only did this hone my craft of writing, but it made me look at the world more urgently through the eyes of a poet knowing I had to create a poem in response to the day. Each daily poem is a prayer, a praise, or an affirmation of being alive, or something being alive, like the pond sliders who made it through the winter and are now magically appearing in my pond I just cleaned. They will be featured in today’s poem, which I will write and post on my Facebook page. I want to close by telling everyone of you how much I have enjoyed being Poet Laureate these last three years. I have met amazing people in our community and beyond, learned from so many in their workshops we have brought to Loveland, and I believe fulfilled the mission we have set before us to increase the awareness of poetry’s meaning in our lives and bring the voices of the poets to the people. This includes those whose voices have never been heard and are reading their poems for the very first time at our shows and open microphones. Thank you for supporting me and our program, thank you to our fabulous committee (now board, as we have secured our 501c3 IRS non-profit status), and the city and community of Loveland for all of your support in attending and recognizing our special place. Welcome to Beth Lechleitner, our new Loveland Poet Laureate who will create her own vision and continue the work begun by the program’s namesake, our first poet Laureate, Veronica Patterson. Happy Poetry Month, and I encourage you to make April a month in which you write a poem a day!
