Encountering a Poet: Adrienne Rich

This workshop will cover Rich’s six-decade-long writing career. Rich won numerous prizes, awards, and honorary degrees. She famously rejected the prestigious National Medal for the Arts in 1997. As we explore her works, we will see that Rich wrote about major 20th and early 21st century concerns such as feminism, racism, sexism, war, the growing income disparities in the U.S., and other social issues.  We will read and discuss works from each decade of her career and generate several poem drafts of our own.

Julie Cummings is a retired educator. She is President of Columbine Poets, Inc. and Past President of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies.
